Environmental engineers use the principles of soil science, biology, and atmospheric chemistry to develop solutions to public health problems. They are involved in efforts to improve water purification methodology, manage waste disposal, and promote reclamation of contaminated sites after accidental contamination. Environmental engineering technicians carry out the plans that environmental engineers develop, including testing and operating equipment used to clean up air and water pollution. They may collect water samples for testing, or they may study the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.

Environmental engineers may be called upon to design municipal water supply systems, and industrial waste treatment methods. Water treatment focuses on minimizing the risk of infectious diseases, and ensuring adequate municipal distribution. In the field of air pollution, environmental engineers work to minimize emissions from vehicle exhausts and industrial gas stacks. To some extent, this may decrease carbon dioxide output, in order to combat global warming. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of the principal agencies that work with environmental engineers to protect and improve air, water, and overall environmental quality. Environmental engineering technicians holding an associates degree may earn $48,650 per year, while environmental engineers who have a bachelor's degree earn $79,500 annually on average, as of 2015.

Factory Robot Design

Manufacturing facilities around the world are increasing adoption of industrial robots to increase productivity and maintain competitiveness. In both the US and China particularly, application of industrial robots is on the rise. Industrial robots are used in factories and warehouses for material handling and heavy manufacturing operations such as welding, cutting, and assembly. As robots increasingly must co-exist with human workers areas, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) studies warn that most robot accidents occur during non-routine operating conditions, such as programming, maintenance, testing, setup, or adjustment. During many of these operations the worker may temporarily be within the robot's working envelope, where unintended operations could result in injuries.

US sales of industrial robots grew by 66 percent in the past 5 years alone, according to the International Federation of Robots. During this period, US sales increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of almost 14 percent, despite a decline during the recent recession. The Robotic Industries Association (RIA) reported that the world market for industrial robots is driven primarily by demand from motor vehicle manufacturing, followed by the electronics industry. The major foreign-owned industrial robot producers with US factories are from Japan (Fanuc, Kawasaki, Yaskawa-Motoman), Germany (Kuka), and Switzerland (ABB and Staubli). US manufacturers that design and produce industrial robots include Adept Technology, Genmark Automation, Rethink Robotics, and SAGE Automation. In addition to automotive robots, these companies produce robots for the electronics, medical, and logistics industries.

Online courses promote faculty innovation, by requiring professors to develop new course materials. Distance education allows students who can't make the commute to campus to take accredited courses. Advanced Placement exams (AP Exams) are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have taken. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on the AP Environmental Science exam, you may be granted advanced placement in college.

Technical programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. If you remain true to your career interests, via Lanier Technical College dance major, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. If you're currently employed, you can take online technical education classes in your free time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps. For example, Khan Academy now offers free lecture videos served through YouTube. Then there's Moraine Valley Community College biochemistry major, with enrolled students from around the world.

College Admissions Process

Most colleges accept either the SAT or ACT, and have formulas for converting raw test scores. Colleges use standardized tests because there are substantial differences in course requirements, high school GPA, and grade curve difficulty among US high schools. ACT test questions are geared towards higher levels of high school mathematics, while the SAT test is a better choice for students with an excellent vocabulary. On average, over half of students retaking the SAT saw improvements in their scores. Test yourself with practice exams online, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual SAT or ACT Tests.

Recent developments in college admissions include higher numbers of applicants, more foreign students, and increased use of online application forms. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Parkland College spring term 2014, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. About half of colleges use placement tests and a waiting list, and many community colleges have agreements with bachelor programs at four-year universities, so that the transfer of college credits is ensured.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and Pell grant applications, combined with academic scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings make up the remaining two-thirds. The official FAFSA website is fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. Merit-based aid is a package of scholarships and grants awarded to students with special talents. According to the US Department of Education, nearly 45 million Americans incurred student debt during their college career.

Student loans often carry an origination fee. Origination fees are a one-time charge based on the amount of the loan. Financial aid may be administered through the Department of Education or your school's financial aid office. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Parkland College spring term 2014, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. Peterson's Scholarship Search Award Database is drawn from Peterson's college guidebooks. While local churches or temples may not have the funding to provide scholarships, the organization's headquarters may have student scholarships available.
