Environmental engineers use the principles of soil science, biology, and atmospheric chemistry to develop solutions to public health problems. They are involved in efforts to improve water purification methodology, manage waste disposal, and promote reclamation of contaminated sites after accidental contamination. Environmental engineering technicians carry out the plans that environmental engineers develop, including testing and operating equipment used to clean up air and water pollution. They may collect water samples for testing, or they may study the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.

Environmental engineers may be called upon to design municipal water supply systems, and industrial waste treatment methods. Water treatment focuses on minimizing the risk of infectious diseases, and ensuring adequate municipal distribution. In the field of air pollution, environmental engineers work to minimize emissions from vehicle exhausts and industrial gas stacks. To some extent, this may decrease carbon dioxide output, in order to combat global warming. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of the principal agencies that work with environmental engineers to protect and improve air, water, and overall environmental quality. Environmental engineering technicians holding an associates degree may earn $48,650 per year, while environmental engineers who have a bachelor's degree earn $79,500 annually on average, as of 2015.

Robotics Engineering

Robots are well-suited to perform tasks that are dangerous and often repetitive, as well as to function in extreme environments such as space, under the oceans, or at high altitudes. NASA tests robots for exploration in areas called analogs. Analogs are places where the environment is similar to locations like Mars or the moon, where a robot may be used. Another field in which robots are finding a niche is in medical applications. Although still in its infancy, robotic surgery has already proven itself to be of great value, particularly in areas inaccessible to conventional laparoscopic procedures. Robotic technology is set to revolutionize surgery by improving and expanding laparoscopic procedures, minimizing invasiveness, and allowing remote operation.

Robots all have some kind of mechanical construction, a frame, form or shape designed to achieve a particular task. For example, a robot designed to travel across heavy dirt or mud, might use caterpillar tracks. There must also be electrical components which power and control the machinery. For example, the robot with caterpillar tracks would need some kind of power to move the tracker treads. The electrical aspect of robots is used for movement via motors, with built-in sensors delivering electrical signals in order to measure things like sound, position, and even basic vision. The control of a robot involves three distinct tasks, perception, processing, and motion (actuation). Sensors give information about the environment or the robot itself. This information is then processed or transmitted, and used to calculate the appropriate signals to the actuators (motors, ie muscles) which move the mechanical robot. Therefore, robots must be programmed much like any other computing device.

Online courses promote faculty innovation, by requiring professors to develop new course materials. Students can participate in group discussions online via Google Hangouts, a free video-conferencing application. Advanced Placement exams (AP Exams) are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have taken. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on the AP Environmental Science exam, you may be granted advanced placement in college.

Technical programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. If you remain true to your career interests, via Faulkner State Community College nursing major, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. If you're currently employed, you can take online technical education classes in your free time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps. For example, Khan Academy now offers free lecture videos served through YouTube. Then there's Mount Mercy University mechanical engineering degree, with enrolled students from around the world.

College Admissions Process

Most colleges accept either the SAT or ACT, and have formulas for converting raw test scores. Colleges use standardized tests because there are substantial differences in course requirements, high school GPA, and grade curve difficulty among US high schools. The SAT test is more focused on testing reasoning ability while the ACT is a content-based test of achievement. On average, over half of students retaking the SAT saw improvements in their scores. Test yourself with practice exams online, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual SAT or ACT Tests.

Public universities are more likely to evaluate applicants based on grades and test scores alone, while private universities tend to be more holistic. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Gateway Technical College developmental psychology, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. About half of colleges use placement tests and a waiting list, and many community colleges have agreements with bachelor programs at four-year universities, so that the transfer of college credits is ensured.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and Pell grant applications, combined with academic scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings make up the remaining two-thirds. The official FAFSA website is fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. Merit-based aid is a package of scholarships and grants awarded to students with special talents. According to the US Department of Education, nearly 45 million Americans incurred student debt during their college career.

Loan programs generally issue loans based on the credit history of the applicant and any co-signer. This is in contrast to federal loan programs that focus on need-based criteria. Financial aid may be administered through the Department of Education or your school's financial aid office. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Gateway Technical College developmental psychology, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. FastWeb.com is one of the leading scholarship services online. Local chapters of professional societies may offer academic scholarships to enable the studies of gifted students in their region or state.
